Morioka Sansa Odori
Morioka-shi, Iwate Prefecture
Sansa Odori is a traditional dance seen in Morioka city and its surrounding areas in Iwate prefecture, and traces its roots to the Edo period.
The origins of Sansa Odori come from the legend of Mitsuishi. A long time ago, a demon named Rasetsu appeared in the southern castle town of Morioka castle, and conducted many evil deeds. The troubled victims asked the god of the Mitsuishi Shrine to subdue the ogre.
The god of Mitsuishi, who heeded that wish, captured the ogre, and as a proof of oath so as not to do bad again, made the demon leave hand prints in three big rocks in the shrine grounds.
It is said that the villagers who were pleased with the demon’s submission danced around the three rocks shouting, “Sansa Sansa!”, and this is the origin of the “Sansa Odori”.
Enjoy the fast-paced drumming and gorgeous dance!
